Live probiotics can offer significant skin benefits, such as protection against harmful microbes, improved barrier function, immune modulation, and support for a healthy microbiome. However, keeping live microbes stable in skincare products is challenging because they must remain inactive yet viable until application, to prevent product degradation.
Esse has traditionally solved this by suspending live microbes in oil-based products (Probiotic Serum, Sensitive Serum, Clarifying Oil, Pre-care Oil, and Post-care Oil), which limits metabolic activity due to lack of water. However, this restricts live probiotics to oil formulations, requiring adjustments in skincare routines.
Ongoing research has focused on new probiotic strains like Bacillus coagulans, known for gut health benefits and safety. B. coagulans can form endospores—dormant, protective capsules—that stay inactive without nutrients and only become active when applied to skin. This unique property has enabled Esse to innovate a water-based mist containing live, beneficial microbes, expanding probiotic formulation possibilities beyond oil-only products.

HOW IT WORKS
The overall condition of the skin is improved in the following ways:
Hydrates – Bacillus coagulans achieves its hydration benefits through the production of hyaluronic acid, an important substance for maintaining the skin’s moisture levels. B. coagulans increases the production of tight junction proteins, improving the skin’s ability to retain moisture by strengthening the barrier function.
Balances the skin’s pH – B. coagulans produces lactic acid as well as short-chain fatty acids, including acetic acid, butyric acid, propionic acid, and formic acid. These help to keep the skin’s pH low, maintaining an optimal environment for commensal microbes while deterring pathogenic ones.
Protects – B. coagulans has the ability to produce antimicrobial peptides, inhibiting the growth of pathogenic microbes.
Reduces sensitivity – B. coagulans modulates the immune system, has anti-inflammatory effects, and improves barrier function.
Slows ageing – B. coagulans’ strong anti-inflammatory activity slows the progression of signs of ageing. This microbe has also been shown to decrease oxidative stress through its antioxidant activity and to increase collagen synthesis, thereby slowing the ageing process and reducing wrinkles by enhancing collagen production.

The Live Probiotic Mist needs to be activated before first use. To activate, open the Live Probiotic Powder and pour it into the Live Probiotic Mist, then shake the bottle thoroughly.
Spritz approximately four times onto the face, neck, and décolleté after cleansing. Gently pat the area until dry and follow with your preferred Esse serum and/or moisturiser.
The Live Probiotic Mist delivers a dose of living microbes that has been carefully optimised for daily or twice daily application.
The product should be used within 3 months after adding the probiotic powder to the mist. This ensures that the product is used while the CFU count is within the most effective range.
