Kigelia Africana is more commonly known as a “Sausage Tree”. Its name is derived from its long sausage-shaped fruits. The tree grows to approximately 10m in height and the hard, oblong fruits can reach an average of 60 cm and weigh up to 4kg.
It is known for its excellent firming effect on the dermis, restoring elasticity. In traditional populations women created a paste by grinding the fruit, which was then applied to the breast area to improve firmness. It is now used in many breast firming products. It has also been used by healers to treat a variety of skin infections and wounds.
Kigelia is one of the first extracts used in the Esse products.
The fruit yields two distinct extracts with different effects. The first extract has anti-ageing and skin firming properties, while the second extract decreases pigmentation and has shown a 68% reduction in melanoma.
Kigelia has been used in a wide variety of cosmeceutical preparations for breast firming and toning, anti-ageing, brightening, and even as an after-sun active.
